Welcome back everyone!  We hope that you enjoyed the long weekend and congrats to all of our young actors on their performances!  This week is a big week with Enterprise City on Thursday and a lot of our time will be devoted to covering all of the economic concepts and getting each of the businesses ready for our big day.

Here is the overview for the week: WEEKLY OVERVIEW 4-10

We have been using Google Classroom as a platform for accessing and submitting work for the past couple of weeks.  We would love to be using it more during our day to day but because of Smarter Balanced testing there has been a high demand for computers.  In the mean time students can still use Google Classroom at home to see what teachers have posted and can even find digital copies of assignments.  Please make it a habit to check Google classroom at the beginning of the week to help with organizing your work.

Also, Ms. Vas wanted to forward along this memo regarding Lifeskills class starting next week.

Hello,

The week of 17th the Human Growth and Development Unit will begin.  The first lesson which will be presented that week is about HYGIENE.  The lesson covers care of the body from head to toe and oral hygiene.

As always, please feel to contact me directly with any thoughts you may have.

Thank you,  Vas

Dear parents, faculty and staff I would like to take the time to introduce myself, and share with you my enthusiasm of teaching DARE to the sixth grade students this year. My name is Officer Christopher Poppalardo of the North Hampton Police Department and I am a certified DARE instructor for the state of New Hampshire. I have been in Law Enforcement for over 10 years now, and I can say I truly enjoy being in the classroom teaching. I know some of you have taken DARE in the past like me, but I can assure you DARE has changed in recent years. The DARE curriculum focuses on decision making skills, and how your student can use these skills in all facets of their lives. During DARE we will also discuss alcohol, tobacco and touch upon and maybe answer some questions the students have about drugs. I am sure that as of this writing you are aware of the everyday drug problem that we face in the state of New Hampshire and this country. I want to ensure to you my commitment to the DARE program and my belief that all of us working together can make DARE successful for all students.

Thank you in advance for your support

Sincerely

Ofc. Christopher Poppalardo

Life Skills Update. October 13, 2016

Life Skills Classes  Grade 6.

This is what is coming up!!!

We have been discussing kindness, respect, and bully prevention.

We reviewed the New Hampshire Bully Law and discussed it in kid friendly terms. Our discussions have focused on being an up-stander and they role-played various ways to do that.

We will be having a presentation next week from Haven* that focuses on various forms of harassment and bullying in an age appropriate manner.

Following that we will continue to focus on Digital Citizenship.  Check out the website Netsmartz. We will use a lot of their curriculum.  Some great stuff on there for parents as well.

Haven’s presentation will cover the following

·      Students will define terms playing, flirting, bullying, and harassment

·      Discussions about the behaviors they have witnessed at school or around them

·      Scenarios will be shared and students will identify what behavior they are

·      Bystander interventions and how students can create a safe school are discussed

The Clown Phenomenon

Dear 6th grade families,

You may be aware that there has been a lot in the news and on social media about creepy clowns in NH trying to scare people. Some accounts have been verified but many have not. This has been a topic of discussion among the students. While we had all the students together today for Life Skills, we discussed this very briefly and shared that we must be careful not to spread rumors and cause more fear. Police in New England are on top of this and there are many procedures in place to keep us safe, particularly in school.  Please feel free to research this and speak to your child about it.

Thank you to all of the parents who were able to attend our curriculum night.  Hopefully you found it informative and worth your time.  We understand that everyone has busy schedules so we appreciate you taking time out of your evening.

If you were unable to make it here are some of the important documents and materials that we gave out which you may find helpful:

1.  Our Merrowvista slideshow: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B39OwYsp9eNgUGJxRm53SWxxdVU/view?usp=sharing (please do not share this on social media)

2.  An excerpt from Chip Wood’s book “Yardsticks” about 11 year olds: yardsticks-11yr-olds

3.  Information about the Lifeskills Curriculum: life-skills-curriculum

4.  Advice for parents of math students: jo-boaler-Math-for-parents

5.  A link to the slideshow that we used to frame our curriculum night: http://prezi.com/ghjecm339z9t/?utm_campaign=share&utm_medium=copy

Also, this morning the 6th graders led the first NHS “community meeting”, a whole-school meeting that gives specific grade levels a chance to share exciting things that they have been doing.  We shared the slideshow with the school and the 6th graders led a camp sing-along for the whole school.  Check it out!

Finally, there is a permission slip coming home with your child today for our field trip to the Waste Management landfill in Rochester on Wednesday.  Please sign and return it as soon as you can.
